11 things you should do in the 15 minutes before a job interview

11 things you should do in the 15 minutes before a job interview11 things you should do in the 15 minutes before a job interviewThe 15 minutes before a job interview can be harrowing. Job seekers are never quite aya what to do with that time - but experts suggest that you look in a mirror, take deep breaths, and do whatever else it takes to get focused and stay calm. Those 15 minutes are your opportunity to get yourself into the right frame of mind, and set your energy and focus on who youll be meeting with, what you want them to remember about you, and what you want to ask them, says Deborah Shane, a career author, speaker, and media and marketing consultant. Here are 11 things you should do in the 15 minutes before a job interviewStay calmWhen you become stressed, your body releases stress hormones such as cortisol and epinephrine. Depending on the level of your stress, these can inhibit your ability to think clearly, said David Parnell, a legal consultant, communication coach, and author.Ensuring that you remain calm, collected, and cool in the minutes leading up to the interview is necessary to avoid this hormonal elixir, and keep your mind clear, Parnell said.Career coach Anita Attridge added that staying calm before and during an interview allows you to listen better and to stay focused on how to best respond to questions. In addition, you are better able to think how you can best present your accomplishments in alignment with what is important to the interviewer - and being calm also demonstrates your ability to deal with stressful situations, Attridge said.Arrive early, but dont go insideFew things can shake you mora than running late to an interview, so always arrive early - but no more than 10 minutes early. If youre earlier than that, wait in your car or a nearby caf, as being too early can place unnecessary pressure on your interviewer and start the meeting off on the wrong foot, Parnell said.Rita Friedman, a Philadelphia-based career coach, agrees. It can come across as an imposition, as if you are expecting the interviewer to drop whatever he or she is doing to attend to you.Be friendly to all receptionists and security guardsWhen you do walk into the offices waiting room (which should be about 10 minutes before your scheduled interview time), remember to be nice to the receptionist, security guards, or whoever greets you.Its very likely that he or she will be reporting back to the hiring manager about how you behaved, Friedman said.Hopefully, you were planning on being friendly anyways.Decide on one or two things you want to be remembered forWhat makes you different from other applicants, and what do you know the company is looking for? Project management, communication savvy, or aleidher skillset that sets you apart?Keying in on a few things that will impact your memorability and likeability is a smart way to approach the interview, Shane said.Stop rehearsingYou dont want to use this time to over-prepare or rehearse respons es, which can make your conversation seem scripted and not authentic. You want to know your stuff, but remember your interview is a conversation. Trust that you know what you know, and that the interview will take on a flow of its own, Shane said.BreatheFeeling nervous? Try a breathing exercise. This will help with the first tip, which is to remain calm.Counting your breath is one of the most immediate and impactful techniques for calming your nerves, Parnell said. Simply focus on your breaths, counting each until you reach 10, and repeat.Focus on your postureSitting up straight, along with maintaining eye contact and minimizing your use of filler words, communicates that youre confident and professional, wrote Fran Hauser, author of The Myth of the Nice Girl.Youll come across as looking more confident and poised, Friedman added.Business Insiders Erin Brodwin wrote on exactly how to maintain great sitting postureFirst, sit at the end of your chair (thats right, dont rely on your backr est). Let your body go into a slouching position. Now, try to sit up straight, accentuating the curve of your back as much as possible. Hold this position for a few seconds. Next, release the position a little bit.Be sure your feet are on flat on the floor and your shoulders are relaxed, too.Dont check the news, your email, or social mediaNow is not the time to read up on political news. You may hear or read something that will get you all worked up, Shane said. Then, youll be distracted and harried rather than calm and confident.Briefly review your notes, but dont do any additional researchYou should be done researching, preparing, and rehearsing. But if you made any notes for yourself, this is a good time to briefly look them over. This is not the time to be using your phone to look up the companys recent achievements or earnings report, Friedman said. Giving big numbers of projects a glance at the last second is a good way to misinterpret key information.Look in a mirrorDuck into a nearby restroom or clothing store to check yourself out in the mirror. You may have left the house looking like a million dollars, but you could still arrive looking like a vagabond, Friedman said. This is also a great time to wash your hands and make sure your fingernails are clean and your palms are dry. If you wore comfortable shoes and plan on changing into dress shoes, be sure not to do this in the office.Think happy thoughtsThis may sound clich, but thinking of pleasant things that make you smile and feel good will help put you in the right state of mind going into the interview.A smile can do wonders on how people perceive you.Jacquelyn Smith contributed to a previous version of this post. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

This isnt personal How to diplomatically fire your friend

This isnt personal How to diplomatically fire your friendThis isnt personal How to diplomatically fire your friendNothing feels better than onboarding a friend - someone you know, trust, and can speak bluntly to, right? Nobody imagines that when they hire or partner with a friend, they may one day need to fire them, but thats often the case.Hiring friends can lead to the very best, and the very worst outcomes. If you have the fortitude to weather the latter, then it might be well worth the risk. For instance, my fellow co-founder, David Mainiero, has been my best friend since freshman year of college, and I cant imagine running my business without him.Still, having fired friends a few times before, I thought I would pass along a step-by-step guide on how to confront what may be every entrepreneurs worst nightmare.1. Realize that, either way, your friendship is overMost individuals Ive spoken to tell me their biggest concern is that firing their friend will jeopardize their relations hip.She wont forgive me Indeed, she may not forgive you. But one thing is certain if you dont call it quits when the business relationship clearly isnt working out, it will beyouwho does not forgivethem. If you are debating whether to fire a friend, chances are that your friendship is already over you just dont know it yet. Hopefully, your friend will handle their termination with grace and forgiveness, but thats the exception, not the rule.2. Focus on the legal situation at handNow that youve schwefellost your friend, things could get ugly, and its time to get your legal approach in order. Oftentimes, when people feel personally invested, they tend to overlook those pesky legal details. But its precisely during that time that you should pay particular attention. Youd be surprised by the number of legal issues that arise due to personal, rather than business-related, issues.Read your friends employment agreement, and if necessary, the operating agreement for your company. If your fr iend is just an employee, consult an employment lawyer in your state, or if theyre a partner, consult an attorney. Be sure to ask what your rights are, what his/her rights are, and how you can make termination legal and incontestable. Before your friend has even an inkling that you intend to fire them, you should essentially have your entire approach planned out.3. Set up an in-person meetingMuch like breaking up with a significant other, firing a friend should be done face to face. Once youve gathered yourself and your legal strategy, its time to send them an email setting up a place and time to chat.It will behoove you not to betray your intentions at this meeting. Youve made up your mind, and this is whats best for your business. If you make it clear that youre coming in guns blazing, youll only give them more of an opportunity to prepare.Remember that self-preservation is human instinct, and if you were in their position, you wouldalsoleverage feelings of personal attachment and guilt to keep your job. They will likely do the same, and providing advance warning will only make it worse.4. Be honest and transparentThis is where things get really difficult, because you dont want to hurt your friends feelings. As well, your friend (hopefully) doesnt want to let you down or lose their job. If you arent extremely direct, open and firm, youre going to find yourself in an argument about how you can make things work. But this isnt the time for an argument this is the time for separation. So, muster up all the courage you have, look directly at your friend and say, Im going to be completely honest. This isnt working out, and I dont believe we can work together. Im very sorry, and it hurts me to do this.Afterward, you may choose to provide examples and justifications. Give your friend the opportunity to vent, ask questions, and generally be angry. If possible, explain how your own shortcomings have contributed to the situation. But dont lie or sugarcoat your comments. The correct answer to, I wasntthatbad is not, I know, Im just looking for something else. Its, Yes, you were that bad. This may seem unduly harsh, but there are only two options from your friends perspective. Either a) They couldnt meet your expectations, or b) Youre a horrible friend who couldnt give your best friend a break. Trust me, you do not want the latter.5. Remind your friend that this wasnt personalThis entire affair means that you must remain dispassionate. Its adifficult thing to do, but its necessary. Once its clear that the business relationship has ended, remind your friend that this has nothing to do with your friendship, that you hope you can remain friends, and that you will help them however you can.Joel Butterly is the co-founder ofInGenius Prep, an admissions consulting company. This article first appeared at BusinessCollective.

7 reasons to change jobs, even if you dont want to

7 reasons to change jobs, even if you dont want to7 reasons to change jobs, even if you dont want toStatistics have long suggested that working professionals will haveup to seven careersin their lifetime. However, this claim should be taken with a grain of salt - theres not much substantial research backing that figure, and it becomes less and less relevant in our current job-hopping work climate.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraThe reality, according to several career experts, is not to anticipate a lifetime of seven long-term careers. Its to plan to change your job regularly every few years, even if you like what you do and feel comfortable.Change is difficult, but the benefits pay off in ways you might never imagined possible, both professionally and personally. If youre still on the fence about making a career switch, here are the experts best reasons why you should give it so me thought. Here are seven reasons to change jobs, even if you dont want to.Youre coasting - and its becoming a problemWhen we find comfort in anything, be it a job, relationship, or academia, there tends to be a period of time where individuals use that moment to coast.Avery Roth, a career change coach, has seen many working professionals find their comfort zone and stay in it. She said the longer professionals coast, the more they have to lose.Coasting keeps you playing small and avoiding the fulfillment of your potential, Roth told Business Insider. While that may not seem immediately threatening, there will come a time when comfort with your job turns into boredom.Roth warns that the longer you stay put, the more energy is required to spur you into action in pursuit of self-growth. Her advice is simple Act now by changing careers to avoid pain later.Damian Birkel, founder of job-searching organizationProfessionals in Transition, echoed Roths sentiments about coasting leading to boredom. He also noted that your coasting may not be going unnoticed. Birkel said your boss and coworkers may already know what is happening simply by observation.Youre actually losing money staying in the saatkorn jobStaying with a company for more than two years is detrimental to your salary and worth, Samantha Spica, a communications manager for the online careers siteFairygodboss, said. You abflug with a base salary and your annual raise is based off of a percentage of that number, Spica told Business Insider. Theres a limit to how high your manager can increase your salary.Spica said that by switching jobs, you can ask for a higher starting salary. And Birkel said that your new job should pay substantially more than your current salary. The advantage that those in the process of changing jobs have is that they are able to negotiate from a place of strength. If the salary doesnt work out, professionals may decline the offer and keep looking while retaining their existing role.201 9 is the best time to change jobsIf youre looking for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, it is already here in 2019.Marc Cenedella, CEO of the careers site Ladders, said that 2019 has brought the strongest hiring economy in history.Companies are strapped for talent, Cenedella said. They are willing to consider people who are outside of the box. Job-seeking candidates are looking at a time when companies will consider you for roles they normally wouldnt.Dont feel an urgent need for change? Look for a new job anywayChristian Eilers, a career expert at online resume builderZety, believes the best time to change jobs is not when you feel an urgent need for a change.Often when one feels pressured to find a new job, Eilers said, they will be more likely to accept mediocre offers and lower their requirements to get out of an existing position. Many candidates sleep through this moment, Eilers said. They stop advancing in their positions. Eventually, they find themselves in a place w here they urgently need a new job.Rather than accept a role less than your worth, Eilers urges professionals to switch to roles that challenge them. This is, ultimately, an investment in your future.People who quickly learn new skills and gain experience from various places and situations are more easily adapted to the professions of the future, Eilers said. Settling down for a longer time without challenges and stimulation makes you stop learning and aiming for more. You may be secretly gratitude shaming yourselfAccording to career coachLisa Lewis, gratitude shaming is when you beat yourself up about not appreciating what you already have. It also minimizes your deep-seated desire for more. You may have an internal monologue that begs you to be happy where you are and what you have, even at the cost of wanting more. When you weaponize gratitude against yourself, it sends your brain the message that your ambition, hunger for growth, and desire to contribute on a bigger scale isnt vali d, Lewis told Business Insider.Rather than gratitude shame, Lewis advises understanding which of your four categories of core workplace needs that are not being fulfilled. This includes asking yourselfDoes this role use my portfolio of strengths?Does it align with my areas of interest?Does the culture of the organization match my personality?Does this role enable the lifestyle I want? When one of the four needs isnt being met, its a great moment to explore what other jobs are out there, Lewis said. Your gut will tell you if youre in a season where youre craving a bigger challenge and change. Dont ignore that feeling. This is your chance to pivot into becoming a thought leaderAre there certain professionals you admire and want to be like one day? That day may never come if you stagnate in the same job. Alissa Carpenter, owner of career and leadership development companyEverythings Not OK and Thats OK, believes you should start trying to seek out the thought leaders you admire. It will b e easier to get face time with someone you admire if youre both attending the same networking event or company function, Carpenter said. You may even have an opportunity for a skip-level meeting or coffee chat for a one-on-one conversation. Its time to do what makes you happyFor over six years, life purpose and career coachGracie Millerhas helped people change jobs even if they werent sure they were ready for it. Miller finds that her clients do somewhat like their jobs, but feel like something is missing. They often find they dont use a lot of their skills, are no longer interested in the work, and wish they could help people and find deeper fulfillment. What these clients come to terms with is the realization that they wish they had found careers that paid for their bills and lit them up inside sooner. Miller discovers that its not always about wanting to change jobs for the sake of changing jobs. Its the uncertainty that something better exists or that it does exist but you may not get it.Its worth the risk to go for long-term happiness, Miller said. You have to act on the fact that deep down you know you could be more fulfilled. The trick, Miller said, is to do some self-discovery and research. Rather than look at the same terms in your current role, seek out fields of interest to find careers that might be a better fit. The happiness will ultimately go further than impacting your own sense of self. You will be happier for it, and your family, friends, and coworkers will be happier to be around you, she said. This article first appeared on Business Insider. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

How to Work with Executive Recruiters

How to Work with Executive RecruitersHow to Work with Executive RecruitersA step-by-step guide on how job seekers can work effectively with executive recruiters. You met with a recruiter, but now shes bedrngnis responding to your e-mails. Maybe your background is perfect but you dont make it past the phone screen. How could it be that youre not a good fit when youre so clearly made for the position?Ladders spoke with several current and former third-party recruiters, as well as job seekers, to learn more about the nuts and bolts of the process of working with a recruiter.Job hunters tend to view recruiters as an unfortunate necessity in the search process, regarding them as the people who dont respond and dont really know what the hiring company is looking for.It turns out that many job seekers have misconceptions about the most basic role of a recruiter. They dont understand that we dont work for them, said Greg Bennett, a headhunter at the Mergis Group in Cary, N.C. We work for the client - the hiring company.Below are some typical scenarios in which job seekers may find themselves. We asked the recruiters whats happening at their end.Scenario One You think youre a perfect fit for the position, yet the recruiter isnt responding to your application or your follow-up calls and e-mails. Potential red flags may includeYoure not qualified for the job.Like it or not, your work experience may not fit the bill. It could be that the hiring company is looking for 10 years of sales experience and that your 15 years in sales is not attractive. Its also possible that you didnt read the posting closely, or at all. When a job seeker ignores certain stipulations such as a listing that requests local candidates only or has degree requirements that dont match, it becomes evident that they are answering postings without reading them, said Sherry Brickman, a partner at Martin Partners, a retained search firm in Chicago. This is a waste of time for everyone involved as well as fr ustrating for a recruiter.Youre a good fit but not an ideal fit.Third-party recruiting agencies get paid a lot of money to find people that a corporation in need of staff cant, according to Michael Rosenberg, manager of sales, productivity and performance at Ladders. And with a 15 to 25 percent fee going to the recruiter, corporations want to make sure they hire the exact right person. In plenty of cases, almost isnt good enough, especially now that recruiters are pulling from a larger applicant pool.Your recruiter - or the hiring company - isnt effectively communicating the job specifications.Sometimes recruiters arent able effectively to express what their client is looking for, a result of their own limitations or their clients lack of specificity. The larger the organization, the more red tape there is, according to Rosenberg.Your e-mail subject line could be slowing down the process.Effective subject lines in e-mails should reference the position youre applying for, rather th an Hello or Intro, Rosenberg said. If a recruiter is sorting through hundreds of e-mails a day, it makes her life easier if she receives a cue about the contents of the e-mail.Your resume may not be conveying your story at a glance. With so little time to devote to each resume, make it easy for recruiters to find what theyre looking for your last employer and position, your tenure there, and the three most relevant bullet points based on the job youre applying for. If a quick scan doesnt yield a compelling career narrative, Rosenberg said its possible that your application will never make it beyond the inbox.Misspellings of any kind turn off some recruiters.Typos may leave the impression that you dont pay attention to details. Double- and triple-check your cover letter and resume. Better still, have someone with an eye for detail proof it.A generic cover letter could be your undoing.Recruiters may read the lack of specificity as lazy and/or uncaring, Rosenberg said. Tailor each lette r to the particular company, industry and position to which youre applying.Superlatives may be getting in your way.For instance, calling yourself the best or greatest CPA without supporting evidence can be perceived as cocky. It suggests the job seeker is way too sure of himself and may be tough to work for, Rosenberg observed. A recruiter could build a story in their head before they even get you on the phone. What can you do?Not much if youre not qualified, but applying for a specific job and making sure that youve dotted all your Is and customized your cover letter will at least ensure youre getting the attention you deserve.Scenario Two You didnt make it past the recruiters phone screener.Your general attitude could be a mismatch with the hiring company. For instance, your professional-yet-serious demeanor may not work in a setting where a sense of lightness and humor is considered a priority for managers, said Harold Laslo, a staffing specialist at the Aldan Troy Group in New Yor k. Dont take it personally. The longer a recruiter has worked with the hiring company, the better hes able to evaluate your candidacy. You didnt listen to the questions.During phone screens and interviews, less is often more. Whether the cause is nervousness, self-absorption or other limitations, candidates sometimes provide far more information than a question warrants, according to Marian Rich, a recruiter with Bonell Ryan, a retained search firm in New York. Rich said she often asks candidates to give a quick overview of their careers, probing for details later in the process. Im always dismayed at how many candidates launch into an in-depth and very lengthy response, Rich said. It can put me off and will certainly raise the question of whether or not this candidate will interview well with a client. What can you do? Follow up with the recruiter to ask her why youre not a good fit. She should be able to provide a concrete reason. If she can do that - and you trust her assessment - let her know youd like to be considered for future positions.Scenario Three You met the recruiter in person, but now he doesnt think youre right for the job.Your work style may not be suited to the position. For example, the recruiter may determine that you thrive in structured work settings, but the hiring company is looking for someone who functions best in an unstructured environment. Once again, recruiters who have placed candidates with the hiring company have a good sense of who would succeed there. It is well within a job seekers rights to ask how long the recruiter has worked with a certain company, said Laslo of Aldan Troy.Your personality may not be a match for certain company or department cultures. For instance, you may think your ambition and assertive personality could only be an asset, but it could signal potential challenges at some firms. If a candidate has career aspirations and I pick up that they may not have patience before they see advancement or will be badger ing HR in regards to advancement, they may not be right for certain companies, Laslo said, adding that small companies tend to be more focused on personality than large ones. What can you do?Talk to your recruiter and find out exactly why youre no longer in the running. Gather as much information as you can and ask if theres anything about your personal performance that you could improve.Scenario Four The recruiter is being vague about why the hiring company doesnt want to proceed with your application. She may not have all the information.Recruiters agree that at each point in the application process your recruiter should be able to cite specific reasons why she (or the hiring company) doesnt think youre a suitable candidate for the job. But recruiters dont always have that information if the hiring company is reticent to disclose it for legal or other reasons, said Rosenberg. She may be reluctant to talk about personal quirks. If the hiring company is troubled by your lack of personal hygiene, for example, the recruiter may withhold the information if she thinks its not constructive. What can you do?Strike a friendly tone when probing for details. Help the recruiter understand that you value his feedback and would appreciate any information hes able to supply.

In 2018, Resolve to Improve Your Career

In 2018, Resolve to Improve Your Career Look back on 2017. How many times did you think to yourself, If only I work a little harder, my boss will recognize my value. Next year, I will get a decent raise and a promotion. Im really not happy, but I have no other choice? If you had these thoughts or similar ones, then 2018 is your year. Lets face the facts. Your boss may recognize your value, or they may continue to take advantage of your hard work. You may get a decent raise, or you may get a scanty 2 percent (or less). What happens this year for your career depends on you.Continuing to go to work each day to earn a stable income is a great first choice. Beginning to look for a new job before youre ready to zustrom from your current job is another great choice. If possible, hang onto your existing job while you go looking for a replacement. This will take the pressure off of your search and give you time to look for the right fit. You dont want to trade o ne bad job for anotherOne of the great things about landing a new job is that your new boss will pick you. What I mean is, your new boss is hiring you because they see your value. When youve been with the same company for a long period of time, your boss may not realize your true worth. Maybe thats because the boss who hired you has since been replaced by a new boss, or maybe your boss has simply begun to take you for granted. Whatever the case, theres a good chance your supervisor doesnt give you the recognition or rewards you deserve. And lets be honest Companies are mora motivated to offer large sums of money to new hires than they are to existing employees. Bosses rarely want to pay you more to do the same work youve already been doing for less.I get it. The entire thing is a bummer. Interviewing is stressful and full of rejection. Moving to a new company is a risk. It could be better or worse than where you are now. But if where you are now isnt working for you, then the risk is worth it.Once you decide whats best for you, create a plan of attack for 2018. Write down your goals to make them real. Work on these goals each and every day. When it comes to your career, change is a slow process, but with time and effort, you can make it happen. If you want to have a happier life, working for someone who appreciates you and making even more money, then take 2018 as your year.A version of this article originally appeared in theMemphis Daily News.Angela Copeland is a career coach and CEO at her firm,Copeland Coaching.
